Institution
The Assam Police has four training institutions and all these are located at Dergaon in the district of Golaghat. They are:
Police Training College (PTC)
Armed Police Training Center (APTC)
Battalion Training Center (BTC) and
Recruit Training School (RTS)
These training institutions impart basic as well as in-service training to the personnel of various ranks belonging to different branches of Assam Police. Each of these institutions is headed by an officer of the rank of Superintendent of Police who is assisted by a set of experienced staff of instructors. All these institutions function under the overall supervision of the DIG (TAP/EB) located at Dergaon.
POLICE TRAINING COLLEGE
The Police Training College (PTC) of Assam was established in the year 1948 at Salonibari, a place approximately 12 kms north of Tezpur town on the northern bank of river Brahmputra vide Govt. of Assam notification No. HPL.360/45/75, dtd. 4-10-1948.
On 1st April 1949, the PTC was shifted to its present location at Dergaon. This premier training institution of the state was established to fulfill the Police training needs of the entire Northeastern region. The Police officers upto the rank of Dy. Supdt. of Police from Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh were also trained at the PTC from time to time till the establishment of the North-East Police Academy at Barapani, Shillong, Meghalaya and the Police training institutes in these states.
This college undertakes the training of IPS probationers allotted to the joint cadre of Assam and Meghalaya after they pass out of Sadder Allah Bah Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad . The Newly inducted IPS (Probationers) at the initial stage are required to spend a couple of weeks at PTC to acquaint themselves with the functioning of the local police as well as the local customs/traditions/ laws. This institute also caters to the basic training of directly recruited Assam Police Service (APS) officers, Sub-Inspectors (UB), Assistant Sub-Inspectors (UB) and women constables. Various in-service courses as well as pre-promotional cadre courses for UB (Un-armed Branch) officers and women police are also conducted here.
It has a horse riding school and a motor driving and maintenance Training School.
In addition, training and coaching of sports teams of various disciplines is the responsibility of the PTC. The Assam Police Football team has always been one of the reputed Football teams of the state.

ARMED POLICE TRAINING CENTRE (APTC)
The APTC was raised on 1st April 1974 at the Headquarters of 5th APBn. Kahilipara, Guwahati and was subsequently shifted to Dergaon in the year 1977 vide Government of Assam notification no. HMP.162/75/136 DTD. 20-1-1977.
This center is responsible for imparting basic training to the armed wing of the Police force in Assam which mans different battalions and the district armed branch. Besides drill and discipline, the recruits are imparted training in UAC, boxing, handling of various kinds of firearms, and field craft and tactics.
Central Arms Repair School (CARS) of the Assam Police functions at Dergaon under the APTC. In this workshop minor repairs of all kinds of Arms are carried out. In addition, this school trains the armourers of the Assam Police as well as those from other North-East states on request.
Shri D. K. Baruah, APS is presently the Commandant of APTC.
RECRUIT TRAINING SCHOOL
The Recruit Training School (RTS) was raised in 1973 vide Govt. letter no. HMP.365/73/14 dtd. 12-9-1973.
It imparts training to the constables belonging to the Un-armed branch of Assam Police which mans all the police stations of the state. Besides drill, discipline and Arms training, stress is laid on imparting adequate working knowledge of Law and other relevant subjects like Human Rights and Human Behaviour.
Shri B. K. Hazarika, APS is presently the Commandant of RTS.
BATTALION TRAINING CENTRE (BTC)
Recognising the need for in-service training to sharpen the requisite professional skills, the Battalion Training Center was created by the Government of Assam vide Notification No. HMP.178/97/34 dtd. 31-3-1980 and this center was established at Dergaon.
It runs various pre-promotional cadre courses for the officers and men belonging to the Armed Police. Some specialized courses like Map Reading, capsule course for NCOs, Instructor’s course, Q Branch-works course are also run at the BTC. All pre-course training for the personnel selected to undergo any specialized course in training institutes outside the state is also conducted at BTC.
