As per GO MS 1/1996/Home dated 01/01/1996 sanctioned the Kerala Police Academy. Academy inaugurated in May 2004 by Sri. A.K Antony the then Chief Minister of Kerala. Kerala Police Academy (KEPA), Thrissur is headed by Director in the rank of Inspector General of Police. He is assisted by DIG. There are five Assistant Directors in the rank of Superintendent of Police to coordinate the Indoor, Outdoor and Technical training of Kerala Police Academy.
Kerala Police Academy is the main training centre of Kerala Police. The Academy will cater to the training needs of all officers of police department including IPS officers. Kerala Police Academy gives training in Management, Traffic, Communication, Computers, Swimming, driving, Transport and Forensics. Seminars and workshops on topics of current relevance are conducted. Kerala Police Academy has capacity to train 1950 personnel (1500 PCs, 400 Officers & 50 Women Polices).
Police Academy has a Main building of 90,000 Squire Feet.It consists of:-
1. An Air-conditioned Conference hall, can seat 100 delegates
2. 3 A/c Seminar Halls, each of 150 capacity
3. 16 big and 7 medium classrooms, 1200 personnel can be seated in indoor classes at the same time
4. 2 Computer Labs, each of 50 computers for training
Kerala Police Academy is conscious of the challenge of transforming Police training to suit the needs of a modern democratic society. Kerala Police Academy is about to revise both the content as well as the methodology of Police training.Every person who joins Kerala Police will undergo basic training here at the Kerala Police Academy. Every trainee will be taught how to handle and use a Computer;how to drive a Jeep & Motor cycle;drill and musketry; handle and use of wireless set; to write reports;to be properly sensitized to the special need of women and children; to know much about different kinds of weapons and explosives; to handle traffic safety matters; to acquire the skills and knowledge regarding Forensic Sciences; to communicate properly on telephone;to swim under field conditions;to communicate with different groups in a non-offensive manner to be proficient in unarmed combat.
Training for other Departments like Excise, Forest, Fire force, Motor Vehicles etc., is also conducting in Academy.
