Maharashtra Police Academy currently located at Nashik was set up in the
year 1906 as a 'Central Police Training School' at Pune and later shifted
to its current location at Nashik in 1908, since then it is functioning at
Nashik. The Academy performs the important task of giving basic training
to Sub Inspector of Police who are responsible for the cutting edge level
of policing in the State. Directly recruited Dy.Ss.P. who form the first
supervisory level are also trained at the Academy. The Academy re-orients
I.P.S. officers on their joining the cadre to the requirement of the State
besides running in service other training courses for the State Police.
The Academy trained officers of the erstwhile Bombay State which covered
regions of present day Gujrat & Sindh (Pakistan). Officers of the
Indian Police were also trained at Nashik before the Central Police
Training College was set up at Mt. Abu for their training. The Academy
runs various in service courses such as re-orientation course, promotional
courses for departmental officers. In addition to this, the academy trains
officers from Forest Deptt., Transport Deptt. (RTOs), Prohibition &
Excise Deptt. as and when required. The Academy has rich traditions and
heritage since Pre-independence days. Taking into consideration its
importance, changed circumstances and expansion, it was upgraded as Police
Training College in the year 1961 and further to that of Academy since
1990. The Police Academy will complete
its Centenary in 2006 a distinction that can be matched by very few
training institutions in the country, particularly Police Training
institutions. Since 1962 Academy has trained IPS Officers 115 Dy.Supdt.of
