Punjab Police Academy
The Police Training School was set up in the historic fort at Phillaur on 9th Sept., 1891 with Mr. J.M.Bishop IP, Assistant District Superintendent of Police as the first Principal. The last principal before independence was Mr W.ST.L. Hodder, who handed over the charge to Mr Ashwani Kumar, I.P.S., the first Indian police officer as Principal of the PTS, Phillaur after Independence
The Police Training School was raised to the status of a college w.e.f. Ist April, 1967, under the charge of Deputy Inspector General of Police as Principal, assisted by Assistant Principals Outdoor and indoor. Mr B.S. Danewalia, IPS, was the first D.I.G. who became the principal of the PTC, Phillaur. Based on the recommendations of the Police Officers Conference in 1952 and the Punjab Police Commission, 1962 (under the Chairmanship of the late Sh.Mehar Chand Mahajan, Former Chief Justice of supreme court of India), the entire syllabus of the classes was recast providing for group discussions, extension lectures and writing of syndicate papers. Conversational methods of instructions and visual aids such as models and charts were adopted in the indoor training.
The present new academic look was added in March, 1995 and it was elevated as Punjab Police Academy, under the charge of an Inspector General of Police as Director. Mr G.S. Aujla, IPS was the first Director of the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur.
The Punjab PoliceAcademy, Phillaur is one of the premier institutions in the country which imparts training to IPS (Prob.) of Punjab, U.T., H.P., and Sikkim cadre, IAS, PCS (Exec. & Judicial) of Punjab cadre, Asstt. Commissioners of Police Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar cadre, Deputy Supdt. of Police/Inspectors, Sub Inspectors and Asstt. Sub Inspectors from Bihar, Sikkim, Bhutan, Manipur & Himachal cadre besides organizing regular Promotional courses and Specialised courses. The PPA primarily runs four types of courses- Basic Courses, Promotional Courses, Specialised course & Capsule Course are of different duration with different types of training inputs.
The Academy is fast marching ahead achieving new heights in different areas of Police training. The quality, excellence and maintenance of high academic standards at Punjab Police Academy will result in a heritage and tradition that can further stand the test of time.
